From Donegal in the north down to Cork in the south the jagged coastline is full of spectacular cliffs, pristine beaches and topped with a sprinkling of islands and is definitely the coast to go when visiting Ireland. Even if the water is always cold its worth getting in just to say you did! The west coast of Ireland is full of small towns and villages and has no cities as such as Galway and Limerick although technically on the west coast are still a long way from the brunt of the Atlantic Ocean.
The circuits can be driven or cycled but cycling would give the scenery more justice although it may be hard work sometimes as it is perpetually windy. Killarney provides lots of accommodation as well as having many sights of its own. It is on the backpacking trail but is also on the golf course trail so it caters for all types. There are plenty of walks in the woodlands on the slopes of the mountains and plenty of spots to take a dip in the lake. Muckross House lies on the shores of the lake and is a major tourist attraction and looks spectacular when on one of the surrounding mountains peering down.

Love at first sight Independent. Half an hour ago, I was handed the keys to a Trident holiday home at Lisdoonvarna Village. On a hunch, I pull a dictaphone out of my jacket pocket and set it to record on the bar. Like a good Coen brothers movie, the publican’s rambling monologue may be going somewhere. Or just as well, nowhere at all. His Swedish-born wife Birgitta later laughs that she could have related the entire sceal in 30 seconds flat.
THOUSANDS of people have attended the opening weekend of the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival which got off a flying start, with the Senior Clare Hurlers launch at the Hydro Hotel.
September 22, I am back from a few days in Co Clare. The matchmaking festival is in full swing for the month of Sept,as it is every year for generations. It has become a month long dance and music event also with dancing commencing at 12 o’clock every day in various venues and continuing around the town and outside until 3 am. It was my first visit and I had a ball! People come from all over the world and every county in Ireland was represented. A matchmaker is in residence in this famous pub where else and for a small fee will match anyone up for a week or for life!
Couples come back every year who have met in Lisdoonvarna and since married! I did not avail of his services preferring the dancing! Lots of videos on Youtube, just type in Lisdoonvarna. The Burren is a few miles from Lisdoonvarna and is a protected area which is now a National Park, what looks at first sight to be barren rock has in fact rare species of plants growing in crevices. It is a breathtaking sight and no single photo could capture the vast rock formations, it is like a lunar landscape.
Between the Burren on one side and the Atlantic ocean on the other you become very aware of how small and insignificant we humans are in the scheme of creation. Sculptures in Lisdoonvarna square celebrate the music and dancing which is part and parcel of Co Clare.
Copperplate Ceili Band The arrival of a new ceili band happens rarely enough on the set dancing scene that it generates a stir of excitement. A band needs more than luck to play at these events; they have to make great music and the Copperplate does that with ease. The three members of the band, Enda McGlone, Brian Ward and Eamonn Donnelly, on box, banjo and piano, make music that is both fun to dance to and thoroughly traditional.
They start each figure in perfect unison, play a mixture of familiar and unusual tunes with frequent and effortless changes, and waste no time between figures and sets. The Copperplate Ceili Band was formed in December
Each weekend the events are focused on some activity, from horse racing on the opening weekend, country music the following one, three weekends devoted to dancing then the final fling where the Queen of the Burren and Mr Lisdoonvarna are crowned.

What are your own roots? I grew up in rural Co. I work as a university lecturer there now. It was a huge success and got some national radio and press attention for renewing interest in Irish language and culture in a very unexpected way and it was a big part of the reason I was asked to do the same with Lisdoonvarna. I was drafted in to help create a fun mix of old and new! What are your roles and responsibilities with the event? While the Lisdonvarna Matchmaking Festival has run for over years, this is the first year of The Outing.
We want Lisdoonvarna to feel like the welcoming inclusive place it is for everyone who attends The Outing. Ireland has matured in its attitude to LGBT rights but many people still see rural Ireland as being behind in that regard. This is going to be a very fun and very new event, but above all, a welcoming one. Who will attend the gathering? Singles, couples, groups of friends, straight and gay from all over the place! What can they expect to experience? The core activities of the century and a half of Lisdoonvarna will still be there, but with a new twist.
